flow traces - zheng lijing’s solo exhibition
2025.10.25 - 2025.11.30
The passion and exploration of Zheng Lijing are more uniquely rooted in the East and closer to contemporary life. We cannot definitively define what the "contemporary" is after such filtering, yet her works are destined to be a striking highlight among the new generation of "devotees" — embodying more possibilities for tempera, this ancient technique, in the hands of the next generation. The narrative after integration transcends not only geographical boundaries, but also time and space. These unfamiliar possibilities and heritage inspire hope.Heritage and transformation are key themes of the contemporary era, yet the term "contemporary" belongs to every age. It has been nearly a millennium since oil painting techniques spread from Central Asia to Europe and beyond. In its own "contemporary" era, this ancient art form, much like the successor to tempera, initially still retained people’s spiritual pursuit of the divine — they continued to depict deities in a state of selflessness. However, with the advent of the Renaissance, our definition of the divine began to shift, while the pursuit itself remained unchanged.

Zheng Lijing was born in Fujian and now resides in Hangzhou, engaged in professional art creation. She obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees from the Mural Department of China Academy of Art in 2021 and 2024 respectively, and has been deeply involved in the comprehensive media creation system of Oriental murals, Tempera and bas-relief. During my studies, I won the Gold Award for Lin Fengmian's creation, was selected for the Zhejiang Provincial Theme Art Exhibition and the HOWART Post-Graduation Season New Talent Support Program, and participated in the project of tracing the origin of ancient murals in Kaihua Temple, laying a solid foundation for traditional mural language. During his professional career, he held a solo exhibition titled "Static Flow Traces" at Yousheng Space in 798, Beijing. He has continuously appeared in group exhibitions at domestic professional galleries such as Qianhe Art Space and Congsheng Art. His works have been collected by private collectors and art institutions. He is a representative young artist in China who focuses on the contemporary transformation of Tempera. Zheng Lijing takes traditional Tempura and bas-relief woodblock paintings as the core carriers, integrating the ancient texture of Dunhuang murals and medieval sacred image paintings with contemporary psychological narratives. The picture builds a contradictory space where the real and the illusory interweave. It juxaves divine beasts, human figures, household utensils, and illusory buildings, using metaphorical images to project the hidden emotions, inner desires, and spiritual predicaments of modern people. It constructs a visual theater that is both absurd and gentle between the hustle and bustle of the human world and the supernatural world. She retains the delicate and warm flat coating texture and low-saturation retro tones of Tempera, and relies on the embossed concave-convex layers to enhance the narrative tension of the picture. It not only continues the symbolic cultural heritage of Eastern murals but also reconstructs the ancient painting techniques from a personal spiritual perspective, exploring contemporary individual inner issues such as dreams, solitude, and self-isolation, allowing traditional materials to carry a brand-new contemporary spiritual expression.
